Clean up unnecessary files

Your computer creates files that are temporary, and sometimes they are not deleted. These files can make your computer a bit slower than usual, so it's good to remove them from time to time.

Follow the steps below to clear temporary files:

  1. Press the Windows key (the one with the flag) + R

  2. Type cleanmgr and press Enter

  3. Select your hard drive (usually C:) and click OK

  4. Check all the boxes and click Clean up files

Restart the computer sometimes

If you always keep the computer on or in sleep mode, it can become sluggish.

Tips: Restart the computer at least once a week.

Shut down unused programs

Many programs run in the background without you noticing. It's a good idea to close the programs that are not in use, as this saves energy and performance on your computer.

Follow this guide to see open programs on your computer that you can close:

  1. Right-click on the Taskbar (the one at the bottom of the screen)

  2. Select Task Manager

  3. Check which Apps are using a lot of memory or CPU, see image:

  4. Right-click on them and select End task (but be careful – do not close anything you do not recognize).

Be careful – don't close anything you don't recognize!

Microsoft Edge uses 0.2% of the computer's CPU, and that is very little compared to the Task Manager, which uses 6.9% of the CPU.

Reduce the number of programs that start automatically

To improve the startup speed of your computer, you can turn off which programs should start when the computer also starts.

  1. Right-click on the Taskbar (the one at the bottom of the screen)

  2. Select Task Manager

  3. Go to the Startup tab

  4. Right-click on programs you don't need immediately and select Disable; when the program gets the status "disabled," it will not start automatically when the computer starts.
